To Sylvia

i saw a strange girl

string leaves through her hair

all tied between curls

she breathed in damp air

she knelt in the rocks

ran hands through the dirt

she buttoned her socks

she pulled up her shirt

in the garden she kept

only three flowers grew

they were all gold and capped

in a lovely dark blue

inside past the porch

she sprouted legumes

beneath a gold torch

they started to bloom

the sun burned the land

A gold flower dried

she pulled it by hand

and she started to cry

then she placed all her plants

in pots safe and sound

she brought them inside

created new ground

relieved and aglow

she’s never known why

for one plant to grow

another must die
